Looking for a skincare range can be overwhelming. There is so much to consider: what type of skin do I have? What will fit my budget? What ingredients are important? Even when these questions have been answered, how do I go about choosing a particular range from the hundreds out there?
toast&co has a wealth of knowledge and works with carefully chosen partners and brands to provide clients with the best options for tackling skincare concerns.
I spoke to one of its experts to get the skinny on how to best approach choosing a range that is right for me.
So, what factors should I consider when seeking a skincare range?
- Know your skin.
- Learn about ingredients. Look up what is good for your particular problems or concerns.
- Decide on a budget – and stick to it!
- Start off easy. Begin with the fundamentals: cleanse, moisturise and protect.
- Prioritise your needs and spend your budget on products that address them specifically.
- Consult a professional. For difficult problems, seek advice from experts.
- Be patient. Give products time to produce results.
How can I determine my skin type?
It’s easy! You can perform a simple test:
- Start with clean skin.
- Wait about an hour without applying any skincare products.
- Observe how your skin feels and looks. Pay attention to the levels of oiliness or dryness, skin texture and redness.
If your skin feels comfortable, not overly oily or dry, and you don’t experience frequent breakouts or redness, you likely have normal skin.
If your skin feels greasy or looks shiny, especially in the t-zone (forehead, nose and chin), and you often deal with breakouts, you likely have oily skin.
If your skin feels tight and dry, especially after cleansing, and you notice visible flakiness or rough patches, you likely have dry skin.
If your forehead, nose and chin tend to be oily, while your cheeks are drier or normal, you likely have combination skin.
Okay, I’ve worked out my skin type. Now what?
Select the right skincare products based on your skin type. This is crucial because using products that match your skin’s needs can help maintain its health, prevent issues and promote a balanced complexion.
You need to look for:
- Effectiveness: Using products formulated for your skin type ensures they deliver the intended benefits. For instance, using a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser is better for oily skin, while a richer moisturiser is more suitable for dry skin.
- Products that avoid irritation: Using products that are too harsh or not suitable for your skin type can lead to redness or breakouts. For instance, using heavy, pore-clogging products on oily skin can exacerbate acne.
- A range that balances oil production: Choosing products that control excess oil while providing adequate hydration can help balance your skin’s oil production, reducing the likelihood of extreme oiliness or dryness.
- Something that prevents breakouts: Tailoring your skincare routine to your skin type can help prevent acne and blackheads.
What are some of the qualities I should look for in a skincare range?
You want a skincare line that addresses your main concern and indicates improvement after two weeks of constant application in the morning and evening. Results are important.
